The 51 game (also known as Okey 51) is a popular variant of the Okey tile-based game, which itself is related to Rummy. The primary goal in 51 is to be the first player to "go out" by forming valid sets and runs with all the tiles in your hand, or to reach 51 points without penalty points.

  • Objective: The objective is to form sets (identical-numbered tiles) or runs (sequences of consecutive tiles in the same color) with your tiles until you can either "go out" or have the lowest total value of unmatched tiles at the end of a hand. Going out involves laying down all your tiles into valid sets and runs. You can win bonus points by reaching 51 points with your sets without negative points.

  • Tiles: The game is typically played with a set of 106 tiles. These tiles consist of numbered tiles ranging from 1 to 13 in four different suits (colors): red, yellow, blue, and black. There are two copies of each tile. Additionally, there are two joker tiles.

  • Dealing and Starting: Each player is dealt 14 tiles. The remaining tiles are placed face down to form a stock pile. At the start of each player's turn, they draw a tile either from the stock pile or from the discard pile of the previous player. If they draw from the discard pile, they must use the tile they drew. The player must then discard one tile face up at the end of their turn.

  • Sets and Runs:

    • A set consists of three or four identical-numbered tiles. Example: Three tiles of the number 7 in different colors.
    • A run consists of at least three consecutive tiles of the same color. Example: Red 5, Red 6, and Red 7.
  • Jokers: Joker tiles can be used as a substitute for any tile in a set or run. However, if a player picks up a joker that is part of another player's laid-down set or run, they must replace the joker with the tile it is substituting and use the joker as part of their own hand.

  • Going Out: To "go out", a player must lay down all 14 of their tiles in valid sets and runs and have no tiles remaining in their hand.

  • Scoring: At the end of the round, if no one "goes out", players count the value of the tiles remaining in their hand. Numbered tiles are worth their face value. Jokers usually carry a high penalty. The player with the lowest score wins. The first player to reach 101 or more points loses the game.

    • If a player manages to reach 51 points without any penalty points, that player wins the round and gets bonus points.
